Known as one of the most amazing vacation spots to kick back and relax, the Caribbean is a region of the Americas consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands, and the surrounding coasts.
Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the area comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs and cays. The Caribbean islands are an island chain approximately 2,500 miles long but no more than 160 miles wide at any given point and they enclose the Caribbean Sea.
Caribbean attractions:
Grand Anse Beach (Grenada) - is a 2 mile stretch of white sand in a sheltered bay. Considered to be one of the loveliest beaches in the Caribbean, it is a favorite of visitors and locals alike. The beach is located on the western side of the island and is usually well sheltered and calm.
Grand Anse beach has a lot to offer, from water sports and scuba diving shops, to the vendors market and many great restaurants. If you are looking for a beach with attractions, then this is the one for you.
Hato Caves (Curacao) - Originally used by escaped slaves as a hiding place, and before that used for shelter by the Amerindian Arawaks who left behind wonderful cave drawings, or petroglyphs, estimated at 1,500 years old.
Guides will take you through the caves and point out the stories behind some of the stalactites and stalagmites; in the eerie lighting, some take on shapes and are called the Pirate's Head, the Sea Tortoise, and the Giant of Jack and the Beanstalk fame.
Curaçao Seaquarium (Curacao) - has more than 400 species of fish, crabs, anemones, sponges, and coral on display in a natural environment. Special features of the aquarium are the sea lion and dolphin encounters. Divers, snorkelers, and experienced swimmers can feed, film, and photograph sharks, which are separated from them by a large window with feeding holes.
In the animal-encounters section, you are able to swim among stingrays, grouper, sea turtles, and other marine life, feeding and photographing these creatures in a controlled environment where safety is always a consideration.
Puerto Rican Museum of Arts (Puerto Rico) - A showcase for local and international talent including José Campeche, Francisco Oller, and Antonio Martorell.
San Juan Botanical Garden (Puerto Rico) - Many residents consider the Botanical Garden of the University of Puerto Rico as their private reserve. Hundreds of species of tropical and subtropical vegetation line the paths, ponds and bridges of the Garden.
One area boasts 30,000 orchids, another area has an exotic collection of Helliconias. A young palm garden displays 125 species and the bamboo collection includes one variety that can grow 4 feet in one day. An aquatic garden is peppered with water lilies and Egyptian papyrus.
Coral World Ocean Park (Virgin Islands) - Experience the beauty and magic of life under and above the Caribbean Sea. Stay dry while gazing into the ocean from 15 feet under in the Undersea Observatory. Observe seahorses, giant lobsters, scorpion fish and other fascinating sea life in the Marine Gardens, or get in and swim with the Sea lions.
However you choose to get up close and personal with the marine life, birds and land critters, your visit will be memorable.
Where to eat in the Caribbean:
Nobu (Bahamas) - Nobu is one of the most-talked-about and one of the best restaurants on island. The setting is glamorous, and the cuisine is excellent.
Astrolab Observatory Restaurant (Curacao) - Located in the Kurá Hulanda compound, this world-class restaurant is located next to the Indian Marble Garden. This is the best of the many restaurants located within this shopping and dining compound; part of the restored 18th-century village of Otrobanda. The restaurant is named for the collection of astrolabes on display nearby.
Boathouse (Curacao) - Located on a hill top setting, overlooking the sparkling Spanish waters on Curacao's west coast, Boathouse welcomes you on board! Whether you prefer casual dining or elegant cuisine, there is an array of tempting dishes for you to explore.
There is no better place to enjoy a stunning Caribbean sunset and cool breeze than on the deck at Boathouse. Sit back, relax and soak in the atmosphere while enjoying a beverage and a meal you will not soon forget.
True Blue Restaurant (Grenada) - Built on a deck directly over the water allowing guests to take full advantage of the views of the bay. The unique design with tree trunk columns and exotic Caribbean flowers in every corner makes it a truly tropical paradise.
Parrot Club (Puerto Rico) - One of the most sought-after restaurants in Old San Juan. This bistro and bar serves Nuevo Latino cuisine that blends traditional Puerto Rican with Spanish, Taíno, and African influences. Enjoy your dinner among the scattered potted ferns, palms, and orchids.
Caribbean Shopping:
International Bazaar & Port Lucaya Marketplace (Bahamas) - One of the best-known places to find a host of luxury goods imported from around the world. There are many tax-exempt items.
The Straw Market (Bahamas) - Located on Bay Street in Nassau, this is another legendary Caribbean spot where you'll find t-shirts, batik wear, antique maps and, of course, a plethora of handmade straw goods.
Old San Juan (Puerto Rico) - The place where there is no duty for citizens of the United States! While a typical assortment of china, crystal, cameras, watches, jewelry, and electronics is always on hand, don't miss the "santos," carved and painted wooden figurines of the patron saints.
Punda Shopping District (Curacao) - Located in the heart of Willemstad is the 5-block Punda shopping district. Home to more that 200 shops, most stores are open Monday through Saturday. To avoid the cruise-ship crowds, do your shopping in the morning.
