Opening
the day after Thanksgiving through early April, the Durango
Mountain Resort (also known as Purgatory) ski area is just
25 miles north of Durango and is hidden away in the San Juan
Mountains. With plenty of snowfall and sunshine in the winter
it's no wonder that the Durango Mountain Resort is a popular
ski destination. During ski season, visitors can expect over
1,000 skiable acres and more than 80 trails serviced by 11
ski lifts. There are courses for every skill level at the
resort which also features snowmobiling and sleigh rides in
addition to the numerous on-mountain amenities. If skiing
isn't in your plans, try a ride on the Durango and Silverton
railroad.
Ever
wanted to ride an old fashioned locomotive? Well you can on
the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. While riding
on this historic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive, visitors
can take in breath taking views of the San Juan National Forest
as the train winds through 46 miles of beautiful country before
stopping in the historic mining town of Silverton. The Durango
Railroad will have been in continuous operation for 125 years
in 2006 . Seats sell out quickly so make sure you have your
tickets purchased before the day you intend to ride. If the
views from the railroad aren't enough, there are always the
spectacular views in the Mesa Verde National Park just 35
miles west of Durango.
Mesa
Verde National Park visitors can walk in the footsteps of
the Anasazi civilization and tour the numerous cliff dwellings
and villages. There are thousands of well preserved artifacts
which are located in the Anasazi's ceremonial houses known
as 'kivas'. Visitors can take turns trying to translate the
petroglyphs of the Anasazi people. Mesa Verde National Park
is open year round.
From the railroad to the ski slopes and everything in between,
