Madison Lake - Madison Wisconsin - © Photo by Skot Weidemann and Courtesy of GMCVBMadison thrives mostly around the beautiful University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and the immense Wisconsin State Capitol. Resting between the shores of two bodies of water, Madison's claim is as "The City of Lakes". To the northwest is Lake Mendota; to the southwest is Lake Monona. The Midwest comfort found in Madison draws outdoor lovers from around the United States and Canada - the town features over 150 parks and continues to add more each year. Several outdoor recreation destinations are just a short drive away in the surrounding Madison area, including great hiking, canoeing, backpacking, fishing, and swimming in the summer and skiing, ice skating, and snowshoeing in the winter.

Wisconsin State Capitol - Madison, WisconsinMadison attractions are plentiful and diverse. Starting in Downtown Madison, visitors can't miss the Capitol building with its Greek and Roman style architecture similar to the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. Tours of the impressive structure are available daily. Capitol Square hosts the Dane Country Farmer's Market twice a week (Wed., Sat.) throughout the summer and early fall. The market features locally grown fruits, vegetables and other Madison area foods and crafts.

Near Capitol Square, visitors can easily stroll State Street's pedestrian-friendly walkway (closed to traffic) that runs between the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus to the Capitol. Full of students, shopping, bars and coffee shops-State Street is the perfect hang out to experience the essence of Madison with its education and government centers. The bars get crowded on weekends, especially in the fall when football fans come to cheer the Badgers.

Architecture enthusiasts can visit the rich Midwest-style architecture found by wandering the neighborhoods just northeast of downtown and to the Southwest of State Street. Frank Lloyd Wright's influence and actual creations can be found throughout Madison, including the limestone, copper and glass Unitarian Meeting House and the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. Both are worth a visit. Wright's 600-acre Taliesin estate, a National Historic Landmark, is only 45 minutes west of Madison in Spring Green (Call 608-588-7900 for tour prices and times).

Other cultural Madison attractions include the Olbrich Botanical Garden and Madison Art Center; both are free to the public. The University of Wisconsin also features museums, exhibits and performing arts that are worth checking out. Since Madison proudly offers more restaurants per capita than anywhere in the U.S., dining options are plentiful and range from budget to gourmet. Look for the city's best restaurants in the Capitol Square neighborhood. Whatever flavors you seek, there is the perfect restaurant waiting for you in Madison. Madison's university atmosphere attracts an exciting mix of small cafes, independent bookstores, crowded brewpubs, unique boutiques and delicious bakeries.

Madison's outdoor, educational and environmental friendliness have been recognized in several national publications placing Madison as a top destination. Recently, Bicycling magazine named Madison the #1 city for cycling and Travel+Leisure Family magazine selected Madison as one of three university towns in the U.S. perfect for a family vacation destination. In 1948, Life magazine featured Madison as its pick for the best place to live in America. Today the Madison area continues to rank as one of the best places to live in the U.S. And if it's a great community in which to live, you can count on Madison being a great place to visit.
