ecosystem in the nation. Stroll under the Cypress trees and colorful umbrellas that shade the riverbanks. Pick up some University of Texas memorabilia or sample the southwestern flavor with a bowl of San Antonio’s famous chili.

Take a ride on a river boat tour or wander the 15-miles of pathways - by foot or bike - that connect to popular sites like: the Majestic Theatre, San Antonio Museum of Art, San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral, La Villita Historic Arts Village, Briscoe Western Art Museum, and Tower of the Americas. Built for the 1968 world fair in Hemisfare Park, the tower is a great place to see how the city’s present blends with its past.

The Alamo & Spanish Missions

Perhaps the most famous San Antonio site—thanks to the movie starring John Wayne as Davy Crockett — is the Alamo. The film depicts the historic Battle of the Alamo where 200 Texans fought for their independence from Mexico in 1836. After 13 days, the Alamo fell and Texas lost the battle. Davy Crockett was a real soldier who lost his life during the battle.

During the 18th century, Spanish friars built five missions along the river: Mission San Antonio de Valero, Mission San José (The Alamo), Mission Concepción, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada. The remarkable stone structures are all within three miles of each other and were meant to be self-sustaining in farming, ranching, and trades. They are the largest concentration of missions in North America and were named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). See them all as you walk along the Mission Trail in San Antonio Missions National Historic Park.
