Witness History At The Golden Spike National Historic Site
Railroad enthusiasts traveling near Brigham City, Utah will want to schedule a special visit to the Golden Spike National Historic Site. It is here, on Promontory Summit, that the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroads joined in 1869. Now, visitors can take a look back through history and enjoy this triumphant moment.
When you arrive at the Site, located off of State Route 83, head straight to the Visitor Center. They provide detailed information about the Golden Spike National Historic Site, fascinating artifacts, guided tours and Ranger-led programs. You can also be part of the Reenactment Ceremony which incorporates actors playing prominent historical figures like Leland Stanford and Thomas Durant for the big moment which effectively created the Transcontinental Railroad. You can even visit the iconic golden spike which provides a ceremonial marker for the joining.
You can tour the engine house to see the replica engines, see steam engine demonstrations or take an auto tour of the Promontory Summit. The Big Fill Loop Trail allows for hikers to roam through the sites of the Central Pacific Railroad’s exciting “Big Fill” and to witness the cutting, drilling and blasting efforts required to bring the railroads together.
