Jimmy Carter National Historic Site
America's 39th president, Jimmy Carter, came from Plains in central Georgia. The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site includes many sites where he grew up, including his home, school, boyhood farm, plus the railroad depot that served as his campaign headquarters. Begin a visit to the historic site at the Plains High School, which now houses the Visitor Center & Museum.
The Carter Boyhood Farm, where Jimmy Carter lived from age 4 to 17, can be enjoyed on a self-guided walking tour. Over at the Plains Train Depot, explore artifacts from the presidential campaign. Don't leave the national historic site without taking a photo of the 13-foot tall, smiling peanut that pays tribute to this peanut-farmer-turned-president.
