Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site: Home of Nobel Prize-Winning Playwright
Visit the home of America's only Nobel Prize-winning playwright in Danville, California. Eugene O’Neill lived and wrote in Northern California during the height of his career. It was in this home that he created his most powerful plays, including The Iceman Cometh, Hughie, Long Day's Journey Into Night, and A Moon for the Misbegotten. He used his Nobel Prize money to build the hillside residence, a Monterey Colonial home he named Tao House. O’Neill and his wife, actress Carlotta Monterey, lived here between 1937 and 1944, decorating the two-story home with Asian art and décor.
Self-guided tours of the Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site are available on Saturdays; guided visits must be reserved in advance with the National Park Service. While the address of the home is not published, it is widely known that it is located on a gated estate in Danville near Kuss Road. There is no parking; visitors must take a free National Park Service shuttle from the town of Danville.
