The Best Western Space Age Lodge and Coffee Shop was built in 1964. It is a unique and "way out" place to stay and dine. In addition, it is one of the first properties to carry the Best Western name.
Al Stovall, a past president of Best Western, was the original owner and designer, and was inspired in the design by his affiliation with the newly formed Space program. He owned a copper mine and a plastic factory, which made his ability to create special designs and implement a variety of creative interior and exterior decorations a cinch. Many of the lamps, room dividers and exterior do-dads were made from materials from his mine and factory. Until the renovation in 1996, three satellite replicas, which were ten foot in diameter, sat upon the roof above the rooms at the lodge.
During Al's earlier years he was a supplier of manganese for the government during World War II. This substance was a rare and vital material used in America's submarines. This was the beginning of Al's friendship with the military, and in future years, the space program. After the Russians launched "Sputnik", he was extremely interested in the new NASA program. His collection of astronaut-signed pictures decorated the walls of the lobby and the coffee shop. These have been returned to the remaining family members, after Mr. Stovall passed away in 1973.
The Lodge & Coffee Shop were renovated in 1996, undergoing a futuristic facelift, using modern materials and a unique design, intergrading hand painted murals of outer space. A spaceship now rests on the top of the lobby. This spaceship is 28 feet in diameter, and 28 foot high. On the inside of the spaceship, looking up from the interior of the lobby, you will see a hand painted three-tiered mural of outer space.
A fire destroyed the coffee shop in 1998. In May of 1999 the new Space Age Outer Limits Restaurant made its debut. A 3 D hand painted mural of a spaceship greets you when you first enter the double door entrance. The architecture generated over 40 years ago has been updated, but the hopes and dreams behind this futuristic appearance remains. Offer the guest everything they need for an overnight stay, throw in a unique environment and the guests will come back, generation after generation.
Thank you for being a guest at the Best Western Space Age Lodge and Coffee Shop.
