Each spring a Renaissance kingdom rises in the fields outside town, and rows of Victorian gingerbread mansions line the streets year-round. The Best Western Plus Waxahachie Inn and Suites make a comfortable base for it in Waxahachie, Texas, just south of Dallas.

Jousting and turkey legs fill the Scarborough Renaissance Festival on spring weekends nearby, the gingerbread-trimmed courthouse and the historic square have stood in for small-town America in dozens of movies, and the shops and cafes of downtown sit close by. A free breakfast and an easy interstate location round out the stay, with dining and the highway close by. Costumed knights, artisans and falconers fill the spring festival weekends, a Gingerbread Trail tour opens the grand Victorian homes each summer, and the Ellis County courthouse stands as one of the most photographed in the state. Antique shops and cafes line the brick square downtown, and film crews still use the old streets as a backdrop. Dallas and its museums and ballparks lie about 30 minutes north.
