Attractions

  • 5.00 kilometer(s) from Bory Castle, The building features a range of architectural styles--from Scottish to Romanesque to Gothic-all eccentrically combined. You can freely climb the towers and walk among the garden's sculptures, which were all created by Bory. Inside are several galleries featuring Bory's paintings, many of which are of his wife, for whom the castle was built.
  • 4.00 kilometer(s) from St Istvan Cathedral, St. Istvan Cathedral was founded by King Bela IV in the 13th century but very little remains from that building since the church has been reconstructed several times. Parts of the coronation ceremonies have been held here. The statues above the entrance depict the saints Istvan, Laszlo, and Imre.
  • 2.00 kilometer(s) from The Basilica of Szekesfe, the Saint Stephen's Basilica (not identical to the other in Budapest) has medieval origins. The crypt(see in the other tip) was built in Romanic style. The Baroque Basilica was constructed according to the plans of Martin Grabner between 1758 and 1768. The altar painting is a work of Vincenz Fischer, while the altar was projected by Franz Anton Hillebrandt who was the architect of the Royal Court in Vienna. If it's true (I'm not convinced at all that it's original) in this church is guarded one piece of Saint Stephen's skull.
  • 10.00 kilometer(s) from Archeological exhibition, A new permanent archaeological exhibition of the St. Stephen Museum on the first floor of the convent. We contemporaneously declared open the Roman Stonework on the ground floor and at the formal courtyard. The exhibition won the European Museum of the Years Award - Special Commendation in 1993. The Roman Stonework shows the stone monuments of Fejer County from the 1st-4th century. Most of them are tombstones, sarcophagi, altars, milestones, and fractions of emperor's sculptures. On the first floor, there are four independent exhibitions to find, which present the archaeological findings of Fejer County from the Neolithic Age to the end of the Turkish.
  • 4.00 kilometer(s) from Istvan Csok Gallery, Kuno von Klebelsberg and Tibor Gerevich put a huge emphasis in their cultural policy in the 20s on the education of young artists abroad. Between 1928-30 the Italy-oriented Tibor Gerevich, the curator of the Hungarian Academy of Rome invited Vilmos Aba Novak to the Italian capital. The aim of the invitation was to get a clear excellent taste after seeing the art of Rome and Italy. Parallel with the modern Italian ambitions, the historical approach of Neoclassicism appeared in Hungary as well. The government wanted to represent and familiarize Hungarian art with its official support in Europe.
  • 5.00 kilometer(s) from New Hungarian Gallery, the visual art collection of the St. Stephen Museum is one of the most remarkable ones in Hungary. The gallery became remarkable at the beginning of the 60s thanks to the Csontvary exhibition. At that time, we started our new exhibition program which made a name for the museum country-wide besides our ethnographical and archaeological collection. Next to the monographic, retrospective, and thematic exhibitions, the outstanding series of this large-scale project was named 'The Art of the 20th Century'. The masterpieces came under our ownership by purchasing or donations. Most of them are from the era after 1945 until today. A selection of these can be seen in the permanent exhibition of the New Hungarian Art Gallery. The exhibition presents the most important and progressive considered tendencies after WW II. Because of the conditions and the lack of space, it is not possible to present the visual art after 1945 until today as one complete collection.
  • 6.00 kilometer(s) from Church of the Jesuits, this church had been constructed before the Basilica was built: between 1745-51. The ceilings and frescos, which are even more spectacular than those in the Basilica, are works of Caspar Franz Sambach Austrian painter. After Joseph the 2nd dismissed the Jesuit order, the church was given to the Paulita order and then in 1813 the Cistercita order received it.
  • 4.00 kilometer(s) from Black Eagle Pharmacy Museum, has worked until 1971 as a pharmacy. After the renovation of the equipment, the 200-year-old building re-opened its doors in 1975 as a museum for visitors.
  • 3.00 kilometer(s) from The Russian War Memorial, is situated just 200 meters north of the railway station, along Deak Ferenc Street. It is quite moving to walk around there and look at the ages of the victims, as it is at every war cemetery. The soldiers and officers come in a way closer to us when we see their name, rank, and age.
