Skiing in Central & Eastern B.C.

The B.C. Rockies are known for their scenery, snowfall, and slopes galore. Ski enthusiasts flock to eastern British Columbia for some of the best skiing in the country.

Set near Fernie in the Lizard Range, Fernie Alpine Resort features impressive snowfall, and offers roughly 2,500 skiable acres. Fernie Alpine offers 140 runs and five alpine bowls – all supported by 10 lifts.

Slightly northwest of Fernie, Panorama Mountain is set near Invermere, while the Whitewater Ski Resort is located in Nelson.

Panorama Mountain yields 2,847 skiable acres, and features two terrain parks and over 120 runs – the longest of which is 5.5 kilometers. Found in the Selkirk Mountains, Whitewater Ski Resort offers 1,184 acres of skiable terrain, including 46 runs – the longest being 1,609 meters.

Closer to central B.C., ski areas like Sun Peaks and Silver Star attract winter sports enthusiasts from all over British Columbia and the northwestern United States. Located in Kamloops and formerly Tod Mountain, Sun Peaks Mountain ski area features 122 runs over 3,678 skiable acres – the longest being eight kilometers.

Found in the Okanagan Highland, near Kelowna, Big White Mountain boasts the highest summit in the area, and is B.C.’s second largest ski area. Big White offers 118 ski trails over 2,765 skiable acres, plus other activities like snowmobiling, sleigh riding, dog sledding, snowshoeing, ice-skating, and the Mega Snow Coaster tube park.

Other central B.C. ski areas include Silver Star Mountain Resort near Vernon, and the Red Mountain Ski Resort near Trail – both in the Monashee Mountains. Red Mountain is one of North America’s oldest ski areas, and boasts 4,200 skiable acres. Silver Star Mountain Resort features the Telus Terrain Park and 115 runs over 3,065 acres.

Red Mountain

Skiers and snowboarders delight in this eastern British Columbia resort. Covering over 4,200 acres of skiable area and 110 runs, the Red Mountain Resort is an expert rider's dream - the resort has been included in many skiing publications' top ten lists. While beginners are welcome here, the mountain is famous for its light and dry powder and is geared for those wanting a challenging workout.

But it wouldn't be a resort without all the extra action and apres-ski activities. Visitors can indulge in cross-country skiing, modern ski in and out lodges, fine dining, top notch ski schools and free shuttles. Be sure to try out the newly opened Grey Mountain ski area. The resort is located close to Trail.

Silver Star Mountain Resort

One thing is for certain in Central and British Columbia – it snows in the winter. This snowfall makes winter fun, for those who enjoy skiing and snowboarding. Silver Star Mountain Resort, located fourteen miles northeast of Vernon, receives an average of twenty-three feet of snow each year covering 3,065 acres of skiable terrain.

The resort's twelve chairlifts accommodate approximately 14,000 people each hour, providing access to the 115 marked trails. Ranging from easiest to extreme, there are plenty of ski runs for every level of skier or snowboarder.

The Rockstar Terrain Park features rails and jumps for beginner, intermediate and advanced snowboarders. The resort also offers sixty miles of Nordic ski trails, night skiing and 270,000 skiable acres for Heli Skiing.

Ice skating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, snow tubing and horse sleigh rides round out the winter fun at the resort. Start making memories at this incredible ski resort.
