Embark On the Polar Bear Club
A remote town in northern Ontario, Cochrane is chock-full of ways to explore the scenery and wildlife. Hope on a snowmobile, swim with a polar bear, and enjoy your time in Cochrane.
Cochrane
Known as the “Snowmobilers’ Paradise,” the town of Cochrane is must-visit destination during your adventure through northeastern Ontario.
Coming from the south, Cochrane is easily accessible along the Trans-Canada Highway 11 – just a few hours from communities like North Bay and Sudbury.
Must See
The town’s primary attraction, the Polar Bear Habitat & Heritage Village should be on every Cochrane visitor’s itinerary. Open since 2004, the habitat proudly features Ganuk the polar bear. Not only can visitors see Ganuk, but they can also swim with him in the wading pool, separated only by a glass panel.
After you’ve seen Ganuk – and maybe even taken a swim with him – take a troll down Main Street in the re-created 1900s Heritage Village. Adjacent to the habitat, the Heritage Village houses re-constructed schools, farms, and other historic buildings.
Local Guide
All aboard! The Polar Bear Express is Cochrane’s second most prized attraction. During the summer, visitors can depart from Cochrane and take a scenic train ride along the Arctic Watershed, finishing in the nearby town of Moosonee. Once there, be sure to take a tour of Moose Factory, and take in the sweeping views of James Bay.
Outdoor
Ask any local – the only way to truly explore Cochrane and the surrounding scenery is on the back of a snowmobile. As such, be sure to check out the Polar Bear Riders’ Snowmobile Club during your visit, and explore over 600 kilometres of trails.
You'll discover Greenwater Provincial Park, the outskirts of Iroquois Falls, Smooth Rock Falls, and other nearby landmarks, all while speeding along on a club-provided snowmobile. You certainly won’t regret it.
As if that wasn’t enough, Extreme Tours Cochrane also provides snowmobile adventures in and around Cochrane. Embark on either the Abitibi Canyon trail or the James Bay Moosonee ride – each offer a unique view of northern Ontario and plenty of excitement.
