Grand Portage National Monument
Discover the History behind the Grand Portage National Monument
Grand Portage National Monument, on the north shore of Lake Superior, preserves a center of the fur trade as well as that of Anishinaabeg Ojibwe heritage. Follow an eight-and-a-half-mile footpath, bypassing a set of waterfalls and rapids along the Pigeon River before flowing into Lake Superior; part of the historic trade route of French-Canadian voyageurs.
Learn about the clothing of the period by the attire that staff wears, as they give you a fascinating lesson as to what life was like at the turn of the eighteenth century in the region. Get there in August and witness a reenactment of a rendezvous from the winter of 1804 between a French voyageur and a British fur trade clerk in an Ojibwe encampment.
The Rendezvous reenactment coincides with a pow wow of the Ojibwa Indian Reservation. Stop in at the Monument’s Heritage Center featuring galleries of Ojibwe culture as well as the fur trade, as well as a classroom and multi-media programs.
