Sports are huge here, and there is a lot to cheer for. College basketball is a big deal, too, with two excellent local teams – the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Xavier Musketeers.
You’ll find a fine tradition of performing arts in the city, starting with the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, which has a full calendar of events. Some of the biggest names in music play at the Cincinnati Music Hall and renowned shows are held in the Taft Theatre. Traditional and modern shows are also held at the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts.
The region’s top museum is the Cincinnati Art Museum, which showcases thousands of pieces of local and international art. The city’s most interesting museum is the American Sign Museum – it celebrates the nation’s rich history of signage. Children are the focus of the Cincinnati Museum Center. As a free city bordering a slave state, Cincinnati was a major gathering point for free or escaped slaves, and that history is celebrated at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. For something totally unique, plan on an afternoon at the Lucky Cat Museum – it pays homage to Japanese luck idols.
This major city has plenty of iconic sites perfect for inclusion in a scenic drive or a morning jog. The Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum is lush and contemplative, while the Roebling Suspension Bridge links the city to Covington, Kentucky across the Ohio River. Carew Tower is an architectural masterpiece downtown, and Fountain Square is where the city gathers. One of the city’s most sacred and beautiful churches is the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption.
Families are well cared for here. Everyone loves the hippos at the Cincinnati Zoo, while the Newport Aquarium lets you get up close to jellyfish and stingrays. Butterflies rule at the Krohn Observatory – and who doesn’t love butterflies? Kids young and old go wild at Coney Island, a historic fun park with a giant pool. And baseball fans of all ages should plan on a few hours at the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
