There’s Always Something Going On In Ohio
Ohio is serious about celebrating its history and heritage, and there are events year-round where you can learn more about the state and its people. Rail fans love the Putnam Rails Train Show in Lima, and reptiles get their day at the All Cleveland Reptile Show and Sale in Brook Park. Starting in January there are bridal shows across the state, and plenty of golf shows to get linksters excited about the upcoming season. Antiques are bought, sold, and traded at spirited events like the Lebanon Antique Show and Sale, while Vermillion hosts the popular Winter Model Train Show.
The fun does not stop when the weather warms. There is a beef expo in Columbus and a women’s expo in Akron. Lima hosts a poultry show and Columbus has a scrapbooking expo. Churches around the state hold fairs beginning in May and farmers markets get going once the ground turns green. June is the season for county fairs – try the Pickway County Fair, which is one of the best – and September sees the beginning of harvest events and art shows. By November, the state is deep into holiday and craft shows.
Ohio State Fair
One of the largest state fairs in the country, the Ohio State Fair takes place each year at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. Each year’s fair is full of staples like a giant ferris wheel and a midway full of food and games, and past special attractions have included Ohio Farm Bureau Land & Living Exhibit as well as Sea Lion Splash.
True to state fair form, the Ohio State Fair hosts livestock competitions, as well as other contests such as the 4-H Spelling Bee and the Homebrewed Beer competition. State fair fun always means big-name concerts, and past Ohio State Fair headliners have included Martina McBride and REO Speedwagon.
All American Soap Box Derby
Founded in 1943, the All-American Soap Box Derby is held in Akron in northeast Ohio every July. The event is broken down into three racing divisions – the Stock division, the Super Stock division, and the Masters division.
Competitors travel from all across the country to compete for possible scholarships and other merchandise prizes. Apart from the racing events, the newly sanctioned Ultimate Speed Challenge offers competitors and spectators a new and exciting event that pushes the limits derby car racing.
