In nearby Spring Green, The House on the Rock is a quirky rambling Japanese-style home built on a 60-foot rock face – a visit here during the Christmas season is a memorable experience. Baraboo is home to Circus World Museum, which also hosts live performances.
Hot out? There is no place better than Wisconsin Dills, which is better known as the “water park capital of the world” – there are tons of places to cool off here (as well as indoor water parks open year-round), plus outlet shopping and theme parks.
History buffs won’t be disappointed – you can visit great spots like Stonefield, Shot Tower, and Governor Dodge’s Homestead.
Bring your skis, your canoe, and your hiking shoes – there are great trails at Wildcat Mountain State Park, skiing at Mt. La Crosse, and sublime boating at Blackhawk Lake.

Wisconsin is “America’s Dairyland,” and from cheese to organic produce the food here is always fresh and delicious. If cheese is your vice then there are few places better than the Gile Cheese Outlet in Cuba City or Shullsburg’s Roelli Cheese Haus. Farmers markets throughout the region sell great organic produce – look for everything from rhubarb to tomatoes. Better yet – visit the farm yourself! Stop by New Forest in Viola or Harmony Valley in Viroqua.
There’s outdoor adventure aplenty in Southwest Wisconsin. Hikers will find great trails in Duck Egg Forest, Wildcat Mountain State Park, and Kickapoo Valley. Hikers and bikers love to tick off the miles on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, and mountain bikers will find miles of singletrack in Upper Hixon Forest. When the snow flies, skiers head to Mt. La Crosse and Cascade Mountain. Canoers will find still water in spots like Devil’s Lake.
Southwest Wisconsin’s rolling green countryside creates a memorable backdrop for great golfing – there are courses in almost every town in the region. Platteville Golf Club offers plenty of challenge and is one of the top-rated courses in the region. Darlington Golf and Country Club has great greens and good food. Prairie Du Chien Country Club is always in great shape and is known for its affordable play. Hilly Quail Run offers a demanding nine holes.
