Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
Lakeside Recreation in Northern Wisconsin
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore encompasses nearly 70,000 acres of idyllic northern Wisconsin land. There are 21 islands in total, and a bevy of other inlets, off-shoots, and coves which collectively make up this impressive National Lakeshore. The Apostle Islands features incredible nature viewing, the six iconic Apostle Islands Lighthouses, and world-famous kayaking. Given the location along the shores of Lake Superior, boating, fishing, and other recreational activities are popular among visitors.
If you're into hiking, be sure to check out any of the more than 50 miles of well-groomed trails across the islands. On the mainland, the Lakeshore Trail starts at the Meyers Road parking lot. It's a rather rugged trail and has been recommended for experienced hikers. On Devils Island, you can hike the East Landing Trail, West Landing Trail, and South Landing Trail – they add up to just about two miles of hiking.
Accessing any of the islands will require a ride on some sort of aquatic vessel – you can kayak on your own, cruise on your boat, or catch any of the local ferries or water taxis.
