Big Bend Country
Chet's Picks in Big Bend Country
On the western edge of Texas, you’ll find some of the highest points, biggest adventures and most incredible sights the state has to offer – and it’s all in Big Bend Country! Here are some of my can’t-miss trippin’ picks for this region.
This season, take advantage of beautiful and sunny weather by hitting the links - Big Bend Country is home to countless first-rate golf courses. Odessa and Midland visitors play at Ratcliff Ranch Golf Course, and visitors to El Paso and Anthony tee off at Ascarate Municipal Golf Course.
El Paso visitors can explore the areas around Ranger Park and Franklin Mountains State Park when they head out on a ranger-led Last Sunday Hike. Leaving the Wyler Arial Tramway station at 8 a.m. on the last Sunday of every month, two-hour hikes are a great way to bask in the beautiful weather amid breathtaking scenery.
Get Outdoors
Del Rio is known for its abundant hunting stock which includes white-tailed deer, wild turkey, javelina, dove, and quail. The city is also the home of Southwest Texas Jr. College and Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College.
In Monahans your first stop is the Monahans Sandhills State Park, ideal for sand surfing and picnics in outdoor Texas. For more outdoor fun, head to the nearby Big Spring State Park, or even Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Neighboring Odessa, Monahans is an ideal stop in West Texas.
Catch a Game
If you’re a sports fan, El Paso does not disappoint. El Paso hosts the annual Hyundai Sun Bowl college football game, plus the many other varsity teams at University of Texas at El Paso, including the UTEP Miners men and women’s basketball, softball, and soccer.
Other El Paso teams include the El Paso Rhinos hockey team and the El Paso Coyotes soccer team at Sierra Providence Event Center, and the El Paso Chihuahuas baseball team – an affiliate of the San Diego Padres – at Southwest University Park.
History Lessons
Founded in 1680, El Paso has some serious bragging rights when it comes to historic sites. Check out the Chamizal National Memorial – operated by the National Park Service – or stroll through the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, the El Paso Museum of History, and the El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center.
More historic information is found at the Railroad and Transportation Museum of El Paso, the 1875 Magoffin Home State Historic Site, and the El Paso Museum of Archaeology.
