Where Water Recreation Abounds

State parks in the northern region of the Bayou State are not to be missed.

Try the 11-mile canoe trail on Lake Bistineau, one of three fishing piers at Lake Bruin, or choose from five fishing piers on Lake D'Arbonne. Poverty Point features a short trail along Bayou Macon, or stretch out on the beach at Lake Claiborne. And for tennis fans, check out Lake D'Arbonne – featuring the only tennis courts in a Louisiana state park.

Chemin-A-Haut State Park

Set in Morehouse Parish, the Chemin-A-Haut State Park is located in northern Louisiana near Bastrop. Set on 503 acres along U.S. Highway 425, this Louisiana state park was established in 1935 and is operated by the Louisiana Office of State Parks.

Overlooking the Bayou Bartholomew, Chemin-A-Haut State Park features fishing, hiking, horseback riding, boating, and wildlife viewing. The park also offer picnic areas and a swimming pool during the summer.

Jimmie Davis State Park

Found in Jackson Parish, Jimmie Davis State Park is set on 294 acres in northern Louisiana near the city of Winnfield. Operated by the Louisiana Office of State Parks, the park was established in 1996.

Named for Governor Jimmie Davis, Jimmie Davis State Park features boat launches and a fishing pier on Caney Lake Reservoir. Other park activities include bike trails, bird watching, and wildlife viewing.

Lake Bistineau State Park

Located in Webster Parish, Lake Bistineau State Park is found in northern Louisiana near the city of Minden.

Established in 1938, the park covers 7,450 acres and offers plenty of outdoor recreation – specifically boating and fishing on Lake Bistineau and nearby Red River.

Lake Bistineau State Park also features excellent hiking and biking trails, plus playgrounds, pools, and picnic spots.

Take advantage of the 11-mile canoe trail, the baseball field, and fishing for black crappie, largemouth bass, yellow bass, catfish, bluegill, and more.

Lake Bruin State Park

Set in Tensas Parish, Lake Bruin State Park is found in northern Louisiana along the Mississippi near Winnsboro.

Covering 53 acres, part of which includes the 3,000-acre Lake Bruin, the park was established in 1956, and is operated by the Louisiana Office of State Parks.

Lake Bruin State Park features great fishing thanks to three fishing piers and year-round boat launching. Reel in large mouth bass, crappie, white perch, and bluegill depending on the season.

Other activities include swimming, picnicking, and wildlife viewing.

Lake Claiborne State Park

Set in Claiborne Parish, Lake Claiborne State Park is located in northern Louisiana on 643 acres. Found near the city of Minden, the park was established in 1974, and is operated by the Louisiana Office of State Parks.

Lake Claiborne State Park features swimming and boating in the 6,400-acre Lake Claiborne, plus six miles of hiking trails, and five miles of bike paths. Other activities include visiting the Nature Center, water skiing, bird watching, sunbathing, and especially fishing.

Lake D'Arbonne State Park

Found in Union Parish, Lake D'Arbonne State Park is located in northern Louisiana near West Monroe. Established in 1967, the park encompasses 655 acres – including Lake D'Arbonne.

Lake D'Arbonne State Park features hiking and walking trails, boating and fishing on Lake D'Arbonne, and tennis courts – the only ones found in a Louisiana state park. Anglers take advantage of five fishing piers for reeling in bass, bream, catfish, and crappie.

Poverty Point State Park

Found in Richland Parish, Poverty Point Reservoir State Park is located on the Mississippi Flyway in northern Louisiana. Set near Delhi, the park encompasses 2,700 acres, and was established in 2005 by the Louisiana Office of State Parks.

Poverty Point Reservoir State Park offers fishing for largemouth bass, black crappie, blue gill, and channel catfish – along with boat launches and cleaning stations. Other activities include swimming, water sports, and the .5-mile nature trail along Bayou Macon.
