Tour Washington, D.C.’s Jefferson Memorial

The third President of the United States is honored with the Jefferson Memorial, an iconic landmark which stands along the Tidal Basin in the National Mall. An island unto itself, the memorial, which boasts a classical revival style, is particularly impressive in the spring, when it can be seen through a border of cherry trees in full bloom.

The memorial was built between 1939 and 1943 and includes quotes from the Declaration of Independence and other key documents in American history. In 1947, after a World War II ban on the use of scarce metals was lifted, a bronze 19-foot statue of Thomas Jefferson was added to the middle of the memorial.

The location and look of the memorial makes it a must-see attraction in Washington, D.C. Like other monuments on the National Mall, the Jefferson Memorial is open 24 hours a day year-round, and rangers on duty daily from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

For many, the best way to see the memorial is on a guided tour – options include tours by trolley and on foot, among others. The Jefferson Memorial also hosts special events through the year, including ranger-led talks, conferences, and festivals.
