Capitol Spring Celebrations
Spring has finally sprung in Washington D.C., and the Capitol’s event calendar is brimming with festivals. Thousands flock here each spring for wine and jazz festivals, trips to the National Zoo, and the famed National Cherry Blossom Festival.
Held from late March to late April, the National Cherry Blossom Festival is a commemoration to the D.C. cherry trees from gifted from Japan in 1912.
First held in 1935, the festival takes place throughout the D.C. area – and features dozens of events. Don’t miss the National Cherry Blossom Festival Opening Ceremony, the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, and the Japanese Street Festival – or Sakura Matsuri.
Family friendly events abound in D.C. during the spring. Within the National Cherry Blossom Festival, check out the Blossom Kite Festival, the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival, and Family Days at the National Building Museum – all free to the public.
Held in early April, the African American Family Celebration takes place at the National Zoo, and features Easter-themed events – plus African storytelling, live music, and special keeper talks.
Fans of wine and live music need also visit the Capitol this spring. The National Cherry Blossom Festival features the Jazz at the Jefferson event, while May brings the Spring Wine Festival to the Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens.
For those interested in popular Washington attractions, don’t miss White House Spring Garden Tours – a chance to visit the White House during blooming season. Sports fans can head to Nationals Park for a game with MLB’s Washington Nationals, or just stroll the National Mall for some incredible D.C. attractions and spring weather.
