Capitol Hill Parks

Found throughout the D.C. area, the National Parks Service manages several urban parks cumulatively known as the Capitol Hill Parks. Each of the four parks can be found in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, yet they all hold their own unique features and act as a refuge from the city.

The Capitol Hill Parks are Folger Park, Lincoln Park, Marion Park, and Stanton Park. The parks are mostly on the east side of D.C. Visitors will find plenty of wide-open spaces, historical statues, and can even take guided tours of the parks upon request to become more familiar with each area’s more intricate details.

Marion Park

Located in the southeast D.C. neighborhood of Capitol Hill, Marion Park is one of the four Capitol Hill Parks in the area. The park is named after former American Revolutionary, Francis Marion, yet sometimes is more informally known as “Turtle Park.”

On-site, visitors will find a large statue of Francis Marion, officially authorized in 2008. The park is also known for being extremely family-friendly due to its playground and wide-open grassy areas ideal for pets.

Folger Park

Located in the southeast D.C. neighborhood of Capitol Hill, Folger Park is one of the four Capitol Hill Parks in the area. Due to the park’s centralized location in the heart of D.C., the park serves an excellent respite from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city.

On-site, visitors will find the two large pebble-faced concrete “fountain benches,” located at opposite ends of the park. Guests are encouraged to traverse the asphalt walkways – some nearly 100 years old – and view the ornamental trees that line the park’s borders.

Lincoln Park

The largest of all the Capitol Hill Parks, Lincoln Park is found in the east side of Washington D.C. in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The park was originally known as Lincoln Square upon its creation in 1867, and was later changed to Lincoln Park after being maintained by the National Parks Service.

On-site, visitors will find two sculptures with historic significance – the Freeman’s Memorial to Abraham Lincoln and Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial. The park is family friendly, as it features two enclosed play areas and plenty of wide-open areas for pets.

Stanton Park

Located in the southeast D.C. neighborhood of Capitol Hill, Stanton Park is one of four Capitol Hill Parks in the area. Stanton Park is the second largest of the D.C. parks – measuring in at four acres near Maryland Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue.

On-site, visitors will find the Nathanael Green statue – commemorating the former Revolutionary War Major General. The park is known for being family-friendly, as it houses a playground on the western end and is also a popular destination for dog walkers in the area.
