Sports in Maryland

Maryland is a great destination for sports lovers. With professional teams in the major sports having their home fields in Maryland or nearby Washington, D.C., plus great college teams from the University of Maryland, there's always a game going on.

Professional Teams

Whichever sport is your favorite, there's a pro team in Maryland. For major league baseball, heading out to Camden Yard to see the Baltimore Orioles is a classic experience. The retro-style stadium offers fans a full, modern experience watching the team face off against against tough American League East rivals like the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The historic stadium is known as "The House That Cal Built," for legendary Cal Ripken Jr.

You can also see action on the diamond at Nationals Park in D.C., where the Washington Nationals play. In the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs play at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.

Football also has a home in Baltimore, where the NFL's Ravens play home games at M&T Bank Stadium near the scenic Inner Harbor. The downtown location is easy to get to via public transportation, so head on over to join the 70,000 fans cheering for their team. The Ravens' major AFC rivals include the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Washington Redskins' home stadium is also in Maryland, at FedEx Field in Landover.

Does football mean soccer to you? D.C. United, a Major League Soccer team, plays at Audi Field in sight of the Anacostia River. The Washington Spirit women's soccer team plays at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown.

Pro basketball action revolves around the Washington Wizards, who play at Capital One Arena in D.C. The arena's also home for the Washington Capitals pro hockey team. Women’s hoops fans can see the WNBA Mystics at Capital One Arena, as well.

Semi-Pro and College Teams

Minor league baseball's Aberdeen Ironbirds, a Class-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are at home in Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.

There's lots of great Division I action at the schools in Maryland. Head to College Park in western Maryland to see the University of Maryland Terrapins play on Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. The school's basketball team is highly decorated, with NCAA championships under its belt. Prefer another sport? See the baseball team at Shipley Field, or watch one of the other 20 varsity teams on campus. The Towson Tigers are the football team at Towson University in Towson playing for the win at Johnny Unitas Stadium; there are20 different college sporting teams here, too.

The Naval Academy's team football team plays at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, also the setting for the annual Military Bowl. The midshipmen's basketball team competes in the Patriot League; great talent has come out of the team, including NBA Hall-of-Famer David Robinson.

There's also college action to be found in D.C. The Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team plays at Capital One Arena.
