Gateway National Recreation Area
Gateway National Recreation area spans over 26,000 acres and offers 11 park sites. Stop by one of three visitor centers for information on seasonal activities, maps and tips on what to see and do. The Sandy Hook section is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs. Tour Fort Hancock and explore the Sandy Hook Lighthouse. The Keeper’s Quarters and lighthouse are open daily.
After your tour enjoy seven beaches along the barrier peninsula and over seven miles of hiking and biking trails. Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Plum Island and Horseshoe Cove are prime spots for bird watching. Tour historic Fort Wadsworth at the Staten Island end of the recreation area. All three sections of the park offer boating, biking, beaches, and fishing.
