More Than Just A Place to Lay Your Towel!
Virginia Beach is world famous for its long expanse of sand, but there’s a lot more to this great American city than just beach chairs and sunset strolls. But since we are on the topic of sand, let’s explore it for a moment. Starting from the center of town and running for miles in either direction you’ll find gorgeous expanses of beach. Downtown, the beaches are backed by high rise hotels and condos and just off the sand you’ll find bars, bistros, restaurants, and cafes, plus beach shops, gift shops, and galleries. North of downtown the
sand runs unbroken to historic Cape Henry Lighthouse, where the Atlantic meets Chesapeake Bay. South, the sand runs to Grommet Island Park, a fully accessible oceanfront park, and the inlet for Owl Creek, but picks up on the other side and stretches practically unbroken all the way into North Carolina. That’s a lot of beach to explore!
Away from the water you’ll find plenty of temptations to easily fill a weekend or longer. Visit the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center to learn about the state’s past and present marine life, then sign up for a boat tour, stroll through the aviary, or sit for a showing at the IMAX theater. The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum is tucked into a century-old oceanfront cottage and has displays documenting local and migratory bird life, plus paintings and decoys. Nearby, the Virginia Beach Amusement Park is features a Ferris wheel, a carousel, and plenty of carnival games. Next door, the Atlantic Fun Park has 16 rides, a go-kart track, midway games, and food stands.
Stroll the Virginia City Boardwalk then feast on seafood at one of the city’s great restaurants – try CP Shuckers or Harpoon Larry’s for fresh oysters. At Neptune Park you can pose in front of a large statue of the Roman god Neptune or relax at one of the frequent live music events which take place on the stage.
Art mavens are kept happy at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, which has rotating exhibits of paintings, sculpture, and photography as well as a long list of classes. The Military Aviation Museum has vintage military planes from World War I and World War II – many of them are still in flying shape!
Come on down to Virginia Beach and see what all the excitement is about – we look forward to seeing you!
