Start your tour by paying respect to those who fought for America’s freedom. Arlington National Cemetery honors many of the nation’s most venerable citizens. Circle the Confederate Memorial, visit the U.S.S. Maine Mast Memorial, and see the Space Shuttle Columbia Memorial and the Korean War Contemplative Bench. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is forever guarded and honors an unknown World War I soldier’s grave. Nearby, the Memorial Amphitheater is one of the most beautiful spots in the city. Other notable sites of national significance include the Arlington House Museum, the Pan Am Flight 103 Memorial, the Robert E. Lee Memorial, President John F. Kennedy’s gravesite, and the final resting place of President William Howard Taft. Tours are available, and don’t miss the hourly changing of the guard.
The Pentagon is the headquarters of the Department of Defense – free tours are available but advance reservations are required. Visitors can also see the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which is always open.
Stop by the Iwo Jima Marine Corps War Memorial, which is a great spot to view fireworks on the Fourth of July. Learn about the work of the Drug Enforcement Agency at the DEA Museum and Visitors Center and get a glimpse into local history at the Arlington Historical Museum. Three soaring spires mark the United States Air Force Memorial, which is on a hilltop with a great view of Arlington National Cemetery.
Ready for some real fun? Grab a pint and see a show at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, or ice skate year-round at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex. The Synetic Theater shows many of Shakespeare’s works and the Comedy Spot is one of the best places in the region to see stand up and local variety shows.
You won’t go hungry in Arlington – there are literally hundreds of restaurants in the city, and thanks to the proximity to the nation’s capital you can sample food from almost every nation on Earth. Clarendon has a huge concentration of restaurants – choose from Spanish tapas, Aussie favorites, Greek mezze, tasty Vietnamese sandwiches, and German burgers.
