All Virginia’s A Stage!

Big cities and small towns across Virginia have great theaters where you can see first-rate entertainment and folksy shows.

The Barter Theatre in Abingdon opened in 1933 and originally took food as payment. Today, the Barter has upgraded lighting and improved acoustics. Come here to see Broadway-quality shows.

In Marion, the Lincoln is one of just three Art Deco Mayan Revival-style theaters in America. It too has upgraded sound and lighting and be sure to show up early, so you can admire the meticulously restored murals.

In the heart of Staunton, you will find Blackfriar’s Playhouse – a recreation of Shakespeare’s original theater, but indoors. The theater is renowned for its attention to detail and the shows reflect traditional Shakespeare elements – many actors play multiple roles and universal lighting and set designs are employed.

In Richmond, the Firehouse Theatre Project puts on provocative adult-oriented shows, and the Virginia Repertory Theatre stages classics, contemporary, and world premieres.

On the Eastern Shore, Arts Enter Cape Charles is a 1940s Art Deco theatre which hosts performances, classes, and social gatherings.

And don’t miss the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna – its season has theater, opera, and music.
