Historic Sites in Maine

Discover the rich history of Maine and take a walk back in time with a trip to the Saint Croix Island International Historic Site. Located on the Saint Croix River, this island is the place where French explorers once tried to colonize after learning they were stuck there through the winter. You can take a guided tour to learn about colonial life on the island and early interactions with Native Americans. Scenic interpretive sites around the island help to further tell the story of the island and the different events that have shaped island history.

Many people don’t realize that this island is uninhabited so any visitors here are only there to explore. You can take a ranger-led program to explore the island, settle in for a picnic along the water, or just head off on a bird-watching adventure. There’s no cost to enter the historic site and you can pick up maps at the visitor center to learn more about the interpretive trail and other key sites.
