Mount Washington
The highest peak in the northeast, Mount Washington is located in northern New Hampshire in the White Mountain National Forest – just east of Franconia. With a summit of 6,288 feet, the peak is encompassed by the Mount Washington State Park.
The Mt. Washington Auto Road and Mt. Washington Cog Railway reach the Mt. Washington summit. Skiing is available in the Tuckerman Ravine, and the Bretton Woods Ski Area. Part of the Presidential Range along the Appalachian Trail, Mt. Washington is known as the "Home of the Great Spirit."
Mt. Washington Cog Railway
A rack-and-pinion railroad track, the Mount Washington Cog Railway is located in northern New Hampshire near Franconia. Found in the White Mountains, the railway was the first mountain-climbing track in the world – and currently the second steepest of its kind.
The three-mile "Cog" was established in 1869 – and continues to carry passengers to Mt. Washington's 6,288-foot summit. Open April to December, The Cog is a must-see while in New England.
