New York’s Speedy Roller Coasters & Themed Rides

New York City is known for its frantic fast pace, but beyond the city that never sleeps, there are plenty of other spots to enjoy wild speeds that will really get your heart pumping. From Coney Island in nearby Brooklyn to the great adventures you can find in rural Lake George, the New York area has plenty to offer when it comes to roller coasters and thrill rides at amusement parks all across the state.

Darien Lake

Darien Lake is a resort theme park in picturesque Darien, New York, just about an hour outside of Rochester. The park has nearly a dozen thrill rides like the Boomerang, which plunges riders a whopping 125 feet before throwing them through loop after heart racing loop. If you you’re up for more thrills after that, try the Tantrum, which is the newest ride at Darien Lake. This one reaches speeds of 52 miles per hour and is sure to give riders a rush. After all of that, you can cool off with some refreshing water rides as well.

Luna Park

The Cyclone is a classic New York City mainstay located at Coney Island's Luna Park. It definitely belongs on the “must ride” list of anyone who is visiting the metro area. This historic wooden roller coaster is full of rumbling drops that will make you scream while taking in the dramatic ocean views.

If you're still craving more thrills be sure to ride the Slingshot, which will throw you 150 feet into the air, while you're at Luna Park. Another Coney Island seaside ride is the Thunderbolt, a new coaster with corkscrew curves and terrifying speed. The area also includes family-friendly fun like Tea Party with whirling teacups that the little ones will love.

Six Flags Great Escape

Adrenaline junkies in the New York area absolutely must check out Six Flags Great Escape. The park is located in lovely Lake George. If you have Olympic dreams check out The Alpine Bobsled which allows riders to fly down a 1,490-foot long mountain like a bullet. Great Escape also has plenty of traditional coasters like The Comet, a thrilling wooden coaster that will get your heart pumping and Greezed Lightnin', a 7-story scream-fest that will throw you backwards and forwards. Meanwhile, kids will love meeting characters from their favorite vintage cartoons, like Taz and Bugs Bunny.

Adventureland

Adventureland is an amusement park that has been a popular destination in Long Island, New York. Turbulence Coaster, the park's only roller coaster, and is known as Long Island's only spinning coaster. It's also sure to please any thrill seeker with its exhilarating twirls and plummets. The park also includes an array of fast and fun carnival style attractions such as The Frisbee, which spins riders around on a back and forth pendulum and a spooky haunted house known as the Mystery Mansion.

Magic Forest

Magic Forest is another favorite Lake George destination. This amazing amusement park has been thrilling visitors since the 1960s, and it still boasts a few kitschy and questionable throwbacks from that era, like a live show that includes an actual diving horse and the world's largest Uncle Sam statue. On top of that, they also have 25 fun rides including a roller coaster, carousel and a Ferris wheel that are sure to please the whole family. Magic shows are fun for the whole crew. Catch the show with the only diving horse in the country, Lightning. Kids can bond with nature’s inhabitants as they feet the friendly goats and sheep.
