Either way, many Empire State ski areas yield scenic slopes in national parks and mountainous countryside – and featured runs from imtermediate to extreme.
Belleayre Mountain Ski Center
While there are many ways to enjoy a winter visit to New York, hitting the slopes at the Belleayre Mountain Ski Center might just be one of the best. Plan a trip to Kingston in the Catskills region of New York and check out one of the state's most exceptional ski destinations.
With a top elevation of 3,429 feet, eight chairlifts, and three tows, there's plenty of available skiing for everyone in the group. You'll have a great time spending the day at Belleayre Mountain – there are 50 trails, five glades, one terrain park, and two progression parks. Each October, Belleayre Mountain Ski Center hosts the Belleayre Annual Fall Festival & Crafts Fair.
Bristol Mountain Ski Resort
Located in Canandaigua, the Bristol Mountain Ski Resort is found in New York's Finger Lakes region toward the western end of the state. Bristol Mountain is set near Victor and the greater Rochester area.
The Bristol Mountain Ski Area features 160 skiable acres with 33 runs – the longest of which being two miles. With a top elevation of 2,100 feet, Bristol Mountain also includes night skiing, cross-country skiing, and two terrain parks: Morning Star Park and Shooting Star Progression Park.
Dry Hill Ski Area
Found along Interstate 81, the Dry Hill Ski Area is a wonderful beginner to advanced ski area in the Watertown area of upstate New York. A member of the Ski Areas of New York, Dry Hill is ideal for Alpine skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and more. Try advanced runs like El Cid, or start out with a beginner run like the Wagon Trail.
This New York ski area also features private and group lessons, an onsite ski shop, night skiing, and equipment rentals. Dry Hill also offers Tubing Birthday Parties – complete with pizza party.
Gore Mountain Ski Resort
Attracting skiers from all over the eastern US, Gore Mountain Ski Resort is located in upstate New York's Adirondacks region, in North Creek – northwest of Lake George. Gore Mountain is accessible from Saratoga Springs via the Saratoga and North Creek Railroad.
Placed in the “Top 10 for Value” by Ski Magazine, Gore Mountain boasts over 100 trails and 13 lifts. Skiers of all skill levels choose between trails like Sagamore, Chatiemac, and Straight Brook – all with varying difficulty levels to accommodate beginners and experts alike.
Holiday Valley Ski Area
Located in quaint Ellicottville, the Holiday Valley Resort is a 290-acre ski resort set in western New York south of Buffalo – but not far from Jamestown and Olean. Founded in 1957, Holiday Valley offers 58 total runs, the longest of which being one mile.
The Holiday Valley ski area also features an 11-chair-lift, five terrain parks, and night skiing. During the off-season, Holiday is sought for its Sky High Adventure Park and Double Black Diamond Golf Course.
Hunter Mountain Ski Area
Featuring a 1,600-foot vertical drop, the Hunter Mountain Ski Area is located in the Catskills community of Hunter, New York – an hour south of Albany. With over 240 acres of skiable area, Hunter Mountain is a popular destination for skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, as well as snowshoeing in Catskill Park.
Boasting 58 trails, Hunter Mountain was the first area in the world to utilize summit to base snowmaking – now combining with natural elements to average 85 inches per year. Skiers can relax at the CopperTree Restaurant before hitting trails like the Milky Way and East Side Drive.
Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort
Located near Wilmington, the Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort is set in upstate New York near Lake Placid.
Part of the Adirondack High Peaks, Whiteface offers 22 miles of ski terrain, and boasts of the eastern U.S.'s longest continuous vertical drop at 3,430 feet.
Whiteface offers 87 runs across 314 skiable acres in Adirondack Park – plus five terrain parks and gondola rides. The Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort also features mountain biking in the summer.
On clear days, Whiteface Mountain yields incredible views of the Adirondacks, Vermont, and Canada – even some of the taller skyscrapers in Montreal, Quebec.
Windham Mountain Ski Resort
Boasting 46 ski runs, Windham Mountain Ski Resort is located in the community of Windham, nearest to Coxsackie, an hour southwest of Albany, in New York's Catskills region. Windham welcomes skiers of all skill levels to hit the slopes of trails like Wedgie, Whiskey Jack, and Wapeka.
The nearby Mountaintop Adventure Park provides visitors with a variety of other icy activities like snow tubing, ice skating, rock climbing – brave visitors even test out the bungee trampoline. The Mountain is home to the Adaptive Sports Foundation, providing lessons in skiing, snowboarding, and more to the physically and intellectually disabled.
