Ski Areas in Vermont

Vermont is home to some of the largest ski areas is New England, and even the eastern United States. Skiers come from all around for ski areas like Stowe Mountain, Okemo Mountain, and Jay Peak.

In northern Vermont, skiers may choose from a number of ski areas in around Burlington. Select from Smugglers Notch in Jefforsonville, Sugarbush in Warren, and of course the Stowe-area mountains – all set along Interstate 89.

Southern Vermont yields a number of ski areas just north of Bennington in the Green Mountain National Forest. Check out the Mount Snow Ski & Snowboard School, Stratton Mountain, and the Bromley Mountain Ski Area. For some action on the level, try Timber Creek Cross Country Ski next to Mt. Snow, or the Prospect Mountain Ski Area just east of Bennington.

Cochran Ski Area

Established in 1961 by the famed “Skiing Cochrans” family, the Cochran Ski Area is one of many ski areas in New England. Located in northern Vermont. The Cochran Ski Area is set in Richmond – just east of Burlington and west of Waterbury on Interstate 89.

Found along the Winooski River, the Cochran Ski Area is now the country’s first non-profit ski area. This Vermont ski area features skiing and snowboarding lessons for children as young as 3 years old, events like the weekly Lollipop Races, and Cochran's Ski Club.

Killington Ski Resort

Known as the largest ski area in the eastern half of the United States, the Killington Ski Resort is located in central Vermont – just northwest of Rutland. The Killington Ski Resort is home to a 3,050-foot vertical drop, the largest in New England. Killington consists of 141 runs – the longest of which is the 6.2-mile Juggernaut Trail – all on 752 skiable acres.

Killington is also home to the Outer Limits ski trail, which is New England’s steepest mogul run, and an Accelerated Learning Area for beginners. Killington Ski Resort summer activities include golf, wall climbing, and hiking, biking, and horseback riding and along 45 miles of trail.

Okemo Mountain Resort

Founded in 1955, the Okemo Mountain Resort is a Vermont ski area located in Ludlow. Consisting of 624 skiable acres, Okemo Mountain ski area is home to five terrain parks, and 119 runs – the longest of which is 4.5 miles. Okemo’s highest point is at 3,344 feet, with a base elevation of 1,134 feet – making it the biggest vertical drop in southern Vermont.

The Okemo ski area also has 12 chairlifts, and five onsite lodges – including Epic Restaurant in the Solitude Day Lodge. During the summer, OKemo Mountain Resort features amusement parks, golf courses, and hikes along Healdville Trail.

Stowe Mountain Resort

Containing Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak, the Stowe Mountain Resort is a 485-acre ski acre set in New England – specifically northern Vermont. Found in Stowe – about 20 minutes north of Waterbury – the Stowe Ski Area features 116 total runs.

Stowe Mountain Resort is home to the 2,360-foot Mount Mansfield – Vermont’s fourth largest mountain and New England’s fifth. The ski area offers 14 lifts, 12 terrain parks, and the 4.3-mile Toll Road ski run.

Sugarbush Resort

Set in the Mad River Valley, the Sugarbush Resort is a 4,000-acre ski area set in northern Vermont ­– about 20 miles southwest of Waterbury. New England’s third largest ski area, Sugarbush features 111 runs across 578 skiable acres.

Opened in 1958, the Sugarbush ski area contains Lincoln Peak, Castlerock Peak, North Lynx Peak, Gadd Peak, Inverness Peak, and the 4,083-foot Mount Ellen. Sugarbush is divided into three terrain parks, and features guided, advanced ski-tours of Slide Brook Basin.
