Enjoy Theater and Museums in Alaska’s Inside Passage

Who would have thought that you could find professional theater on Douglas Island near Juneau? The Perseverance Theater has been holding live performances for over 30 years and has stages both near Juneau and in Anchorage. Having performed everything from classic Shakespeare to modern comedies, the theater troupe is a dynamic community of over 32,000 supporters who are either keen on the scene or troubadours bursting with natural talent.

The Alaska State Museum, in Juneau, was renovated in 2016 and features diverse displays of human culture and natural history in Alaska. Hailed as, ‘the people’s museum’, it exhibits artifacts from early indigenous tribes, historical pieces from the Russian Colonial Era, and contemporary American art.

Juneau-Douglas City Museum

Located in the capital city of Juneau, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum preserves an impressive collection of Alaskan historical artifacts. Due to Juneau’s location along Gastineau Channel, the museum houses a variety of maritime exhibits, like the Montana Creek Fish Trap – roughly 500 years old – and the Juneau hydropower exhibit.

Other featured exhibits include the Drilling & Mining: Hands-On Mining display and the Juneau: City Built on Gold educational video – each showcases the city’s extensive past as a mining community. Guests can take tours, join the museum on a Historic Downtown Walking Tour, and visit during one the of the many programs and special events.

Last Chance Mining Museum & Historical Park

Located in maritime city of Juneau, the Last Chance Mining Museum & Historical Park preserves and showcases historical artifacts from the city’s extensive gold mining history. On-site, visitors can explore actual mining buildings, equipment, and maps of the tunnels from over 100 years ago.

The Gastineau Channel Historical Society runs the historical park; helping to maintain the park for year-round visits. Guests can take guided hikes along Gold Creek, exploring past mining sites and viewing mining relics along the way.

Perseverance Theatre

Found along the Gastineau Channel, the Persevere Theatre is a charming and entertaining venue, playing host to a wide range of performances throughout the year. Southeast of Juneau, the capital of Alaska, the Perseverance Theatre is technically on Douglas Island. Founded in 1979, the Perseverance Theatre features a main stage and a second stage.

Some of the famous plays the Perseverance Theatre has featured are Hamlet, Macbeth, Equus, and even The Who's Tommy, a rock opera. When you choose to visit Alaska, and more specifically, Juneau, you'll be treated to the state's only professional theater, one dedicated to the development of the Alaskan art scene.

Tongass Historical Museum

Located in the heart of downtown Ketchikan, the Tongass Historical Museum preserves the heritage and culture of Alaska’s “First City” with a slew of historical exhibits. Museum exhibits are frequently on rotation, with past exhibits including names like Voices of the Wilderness, The Art of Terry Pyles, and much more.

The permanent exhibit on display, the First People, showcases a variety of Native Alaskan artifacts from surrounding Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian communities. Special events are frequently hosted at the museum as well, giving guests plenty to see and do during their visit.
