Iowa Government Sites: State Capitol Buildings
With decorative gold domes and neoclassical style, Iowa’s State Capitol Buildings connect the past with the future. History is alive at the Old State Capitol Building and Museum, located in Iowa City - the first capital of the state. Built in 1940, it was once Iowa’s main government building. Today, it is the most recognizable landmark on the University of Iowa campus. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976, the majestic structure showcases Greek Revival architecture. Its ground floor is a museum with exhibits on the history of the building, the University, and the state of Iowa.
Return to the modern day at the Iowa State Capitol building in Des Moines. It flaunts a 23-carat gold dome and four more green domes, making it the only five-domed capitol in the country. The building’s location on top of a hill adds to its magnificence, and visitors will find an amazing panoramic view of the city skyline. Grand windows, high ceilings, and refined Renaissance style create a lasting impression. It is truly one of Iowa’s iconic landmarks.
