Government Buildings in South Dakota
A premier attraction in central South Dakota is the state capitol building in Pierre. This Greek Revival-style opened in 1910 and has had continuous renovations to keep its original appearance updated and fresh. The most recent restoration project involved stained glass in the Capitol’s dome and is now a signature design of the building. Visitors can enjoy a free guided or self-guided tour seven days a week and it includes the four memorials on the grounds, such as the Fighting Stallions Memorial and the Flaming Fountain.
Another must see Government site is the monumental Romanesque-style U.S. Courthouse in Sioux Falls. This historic federal office and courthouse building was originally constructed between 1892 and 1895. The exterior walls are primarily constructed of rose-colored quartzite and has a beautiful translucent appearance. Since its construction, this building has been a landmark in downtown Sioux Falls, where it takes up nearly entire city block and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
