Add excitement to your vacation with the wide variety of outdoor adventures in the Denver, Colorado area. Castlewood Canyon State Park features a 7.4-mile trail network, a zip-line course with 10 lines and areas for rock climbing, horseback riding, birding and picnicking. Fitness buffs love the 200-step Challenge Staircase. Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora features a large lake surrounded by scenic wooded areas. Enjoy sledding and cross-country skiing in winter and hiking, biking, horseback riding and water-skiing in summer. It’s a great spot for swimming and stand-up paddle boarding. Red Rocks Park in Morrison is a fun place to hike or mountain bike during the day. Stay to see a concert at the famous amphitheater in the evening. Bear Creek Lake Park is a prime spot for fishing, dirt biking and hiking. Head to Evergreen Lake for boating fishing and ice-skating. Clear Creek, just 40 minutes from downtown, is a good place to try fly-fishing. Echo Lake Park, 47 miles from Denver, also offers excellent fishing and hiking trails ranging in difficulty from easy to moderate and challenging.
Castlewood Canyon State Park
Set in central Colorado, Castlewood Canyon State Park is located less than 20 minutes from Castle Rock – just south of the Denver metropolitan area.
Established in 1964, this Colorado state park is home to several historic sites, including the famed Castlewood Canyon Dam and the historic Cherry Creek Bridge.
Calling all outdoor enthusiasts – Castlewood Canyon State Park features plenty of hiking and rock climbing in this 2,000-acre playground.
Visitors may look forward to scenic views of Cherry Creek and the Bridge Canyon Overlook in this pet-friendly day park – open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Hikers may take advantage of 15 miles of trail – so trek down the one-mile Canyon View Nature Trail, the two-mile Rimrock Trail, and the four-mile East Canyon Preservation Trail. Rock climbers, look forward to a journey up Shakespearean Theater, Porky’s Wall, Vulture Wall, and Morning Sun Wall – plus many others.
Other park activities include bird watching, wildlife viewing, picnicking, and nature photography. Outdoor education is also available, as are small park exhibits at the Visitor Center.
Cherry Creek State Park
One of Aurora's most popular parks, Cherry Creek preserves and presents much of the the Denver metro area's famous outdoor recreation. With a great big lake in the center and plenty of wooded areas, the park is a great outdoor destinations in the summer and in the winter.
Take part in energetic activities, including biking, hiking, horseback riding, sledding, and cross-country skiingm or take advantage of the park's many facilities. Enjoy picnics, volleyball games, and swimming and water-skiing in Aurora's Cherry Creek Lake.
Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre
A one-of-a-kind concert destination in the Denver area, the Red Rocks and Amphitheatre is an open-air amphitheater, surrounded by the gorgeous red rock formations.
The amphitheater hosts several concerts are scheduled throughout the summer.
Those looking for a unique place to hike or mountain bike enjoy the trails in the park. Runners love to run the stairs for a change in their work-out routine.
