Spectacular Outdoor Adventures In Southeast Colorado
Once you’ve experienced outdoor adventures in Southeast Colorado, you’ll understand why it’s a favorite region among locals and visitors. Lathrop State Park, near Walsenburg, is located near the Four Corners area. Enjoy swimming, boating, fishing and water skiing at Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake. During the winter months the lake is a popular spot for hunting waterfowl. Hogback Nature Trail and Cuerno Verde Trail provide scenic views for hikers. Trinidad Lake State Park is located a short drive from the border of New Mexico near the city of Trinidad. Home to Trinidad Lake, the park is a popular spot for fishing, boating, jet-skiing, water skiing and swimming. Hikers and bikers have 10 miles of trails to enjoy. Go horseback riding on the South Shore Trail or try your luck with geocaching. During winter the park offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing. Nearby Lake Pueblo State Park is known for fishing, boating, watersports and challenging mountain biking trails. The Nature and Raptor Center in Pueblo features scenic hiking areas along the river. John Martin Reservoir State Park is a prime spot for catching bass, walleye and crappie. Bird watchers also flock there for glimpses of bald eagles.
Lathrop State Park
Colorado’s first state park, Lathrop State Park is located in Walsenburg in the Four Corners region of the state.
The park includes two lakes for sport and recreation, Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake, available for boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, and other warm weather activities during the summer months.
Hunting is available during the winter months when Horseshoe Lake opens for waterfowl season and closes to other water sport activities.
Golfers can enjoy the nine-hole course located within the park, while hikers enjoy the two major trails, Hogback Nature Trail and Cuerno Verde Trail.
Lastly, visitors who wish to learn about the history of the park and its culture, as well as gain additional information on all activities available at Lathrop, should stop by the Visitor’s Center located within the Park.
Trinidad Lake State Park
Encompassing 2,860 acres in southern Colorado, Trinidad Lake State Park is home to the beautiful Trinidad Lake. Popular land-based recreational activities include biking on the nine miles of trails, geocaching to the seven sites in the park, picnicking, trekking along the 10 miles of hiking trails, horseback riding, and volleyball.
Fishing, water skiing, swimming, jet skiing, and boating are great ways to enjoy the lake. Stop by the park Visitor Center to learn more about the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary areas, the coal mining ruins, and the Santa Fe Trail, located in the park.
