Memorable Outdoor Adventures In Southwest Colorado

Save time for outdoor adventures in Southwest Colorado and enjoy a variety of activities for all ages and interests. Surrounded by the San Juan Mountains and home to lakes, rivers and hot springs, the region offers skiing, snowmobiling and sledding in winter and fun outdoor activities in fall, spring and summer. Box Canyon Falls Park in Ouray boasts a spectacular waterfall created by Canyon Creek. Hike to the bridge above the falls and enjoy the view. The Visitor Center offers exhibits on the geology, wildlife and plant life in the area. Curecanti National Recreation Area, west of Cañon City, is heaven for water sports enthusiasts. Situated along the Gunnison River and the Blue Mesa, Morrow Point and Crystal Reservoirs, the area offers excellent boating and fishing opportunities. Navajo State Park is home to Navajo Lake, a 15,000-acre reservoir. Located south of Durango and the San Juan National Forest, the reservoir features boating, fishing, jet skiing, water skiing and swimming. Boat rentals are available at Two Rivers Marina. Whitewater rafters flock to the nearby San Juan River and Piedra River. Hike the Windsurf Beach Trail, enjoy views of the San Juan River Valley from the Sambrito Wetlands Trail or try cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.

Box Canyon Falls Park

Located in Ouray, the "Switzerland of America", Box Canyon Falls Park features the breathtaking waterfall created from Canyon Creek. Take the short hike to the bridge above the falls and admire the beautiful views, or walk to the bottom to listen to the water rush into the canyon. Either way, it's a delight.

Bring along a snack and enjoy a relaxing picnic in one of the park gazebos or spend a few minutes in the Visitor Center to learn about the area's geology, wildlife, and plant life.  The park is a gem among southern Colorado's many scenic sites – don't miss it.

Curecanti National Recreation Area

Located west of Canon City in Colorado’s Four Corners region, the Curecanti National Recreation Area is an outdoor enthusiasts dream destination.

In fact, due to its location on the shores of the Gunnison River and near three reservoirs, water recreation opportunities are plentiful at Curecanti.

Visitors with boat in tow can take advantage of the excellent fishing and boating opportunities in the Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, or Crystal reservoirs.

Further Curecanit exploration is found on a Morrow Point Boat Tour, slicing through the upper Black Canyon and giving way to plenty of sight seeing.

Navajo State Park

Set in southern Colorado on the border with New Mexico, the 5,000-acre Navajo State Park is located on the north shore of the massive Navajo Lake.

Established in 1964, Navajo State Park is less than an hour southeast of Durango and just south of the San Juan National Forest.

Most of the fun had in Navajo State Park is on the 15,000-acre reservoir. Boating and water recreation is available throughout the year to powerboats, sailboats, and any other vessel you can think of – with rentals available at Two Rivers Marina.

Anglers, look forward to reeling in some catfish, crappie, and bass in the shallow waters, plus Kokanee salmon and northern pike in deeper waters. Other reservoir activities include jet skiing, water skiing, and swimming – even whitewater rafting on San Juan River and Piedra River.

Navajo State Park also features dry recreation in the form of biking, hiking, and picnicking. Trek down the Windsurf Beach Trail, or get a look at the San Juan River Valley along the Sambrito Wetlands Trail. Winter travelers may look forward to cross-country skiing, and can even spot bald eagles in the park in December.
