Million Dollar Highway
Following a section of U.S. Route 550, the Million Dollar Highway travels from Silverton to Ouray in southern Colorado. A part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway, this section also runs along-side the historic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Running through the Uncompahgre Gorge to the Red Mountain Pass at 11,000 feet, you'll drive past steep cliffs, and through hairpin "S" curves on narrow lanes cutting into the mountains. Although disputed, the origin of the name stems from costing a million dollars to build, during the 1920s.
