Enjoy a road trip along Wyoming’s Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway. Begin your journey on US-20 at Milepost 100 in Shoshoni. The road winds past Wind River Canyon and the Wind River Indian Reservation before ending north of Thermopolis at Milepost 134. The drive time without stopping is 40 minutes, but there are plenty of reasons to linger along the way.
Boysen State Park offers spectacular views of the Owl Creek Mountains. Take a dip in the stunning blue waters of Boysen Reservoir, or try your luck fishing for walleye and trout. At Wind River Canyon view some of the oldest rock formations in the world. Take a photo of the black and pink cliffs and marvel at rock walls rising 2500 ft. The Wind River is fun for white water rafting and fly-fishing.
As it flows through the canyon, the river merges with the Rocky Mountain Bighorn River. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep roaming around the canyon rim. Stop off in Thermopolis at Hot Springs State Park and enjoy a soak in the world’s largest mineral hot spring. Traverse the suspension bridge across the Big Horn River and wander along hiking paths where you may see wildlife.
