Parks in the Delta Region

Arkansas Sites on the Mississippi River

Get to know Arkansas’ history along the western banks of the Mississippi River – known here as the Arkansas Delta. Explore the museum and visitor center at the Arkansas Post National Memorial, or follow the wooden deck into the swamp to see the Louisiana Purchase Historic State Park. Then see artifacts of the 17-acre Mississippi Period village found at Parkin Archeological State Park in northeastern Arkansas.

But it’s not all brainteasers on the Delta. Plenty of water recreation and outdoor activities are found along the Mighty Mississippi. Head to Cane Creek State Park for the 1,675-acre Cane Creek Lake – great for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Once you’re out of the water, try mountain biking, hiking, and geocaching on the 15-mile Cane Creek Lake Trail.

Lake Chicot State Park features great fishing on its 20-mile oxbow lake, while the Mississippi River State Park offers hiking on the Bear Creek Lake Nature Trail before lunch at Beaver Point Picnic Area – plus swimming, boating, and fishing in Bear Creek Lake. For something different, Village Creek State Park offers the 27-hole public golf course known as Ridges at Village Creek – in addition to fishing and paddle boating on Lake Austell and Lake Dunn.

Lake Poinsett State Park

Hosting nearly 93,000 annual visitors, Lake Poinsett State Park covers 132 acres in northeastern Arkansas – less than an hour northwest of West Memphis. Arkansas features an array of state parks, and this is it's 20th state park. Lake Poinsett State Park was founded in 1963.

Recreation at Lake Poinsett State Park includes hiking trails, nature viewing, kayaking, and fishing for bass, bream, catfish, and crappie. Visitors may trek down the one-mile Great Blue Heron Trail, or try a kayak or canoe tour.

Louisiana Purchase Historic State Park

Established in 1815, the Louisiana Purchase Historic State Park contains a granite marker set in a swampland, and marking the “Beginning Point of the Louisiana Purchase Survey.” Make your way to this historic park with a drive in from West Helena, found to the east.

Reached by a 950-foot boardwalk, the park is both a U.S. National Historic Landmark and found on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Set 36 miles west of West Helena, the Louisiana Purchase Historic State Park is set along the Mississippi River Delta.

Mississippi River State Park

Found in the St. Francis National Forest, Mississippi River State Park is located along eastern Arkansas’ Mississippi River Delta – just north of West Helena. Found on Bear Creek Lake, this Arkansas state park features a visitor center open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As one of the many Arkansas state parks, Mississippi River State Park yields a full day of hiking on the Bear Creek Lake Nature Trail, picnicking at Beaver Point Picnic Area, and swimming, boating, and bass and bream fishing in Bear Creek Lake.

Parkin Archeological State Park

Also dubbed the Parkin Indian Mound, the Parkin Archeological State Park is located in eastern Arkansas along the Mississippi River Delta – less than 30 miles west of West Memphis. This Arkansas state park is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and yields a wealth of outdoor adventures.

An archeological site, the park was formerly a 17-acre Mississippi Period village – and now features interpretive exhibits and auditorium. Other amenities include a gift shop, picnic spots, playgrounds, and onsite pavilion. It's just one of the many exceptional Arkansas state parks.

Village Creek State Park

Providing a wide variety of activities throughout the year, Village Creek State Park is located in Wynne, near West Memphis, in the River Delta region of Arkansas. The region’s unique geology and vegetation lend themselves to a variety of adventures throughout the park. It's only one of the many AR state parks.

The Ridges at Village Creek, a public, 27-hole course designed by Andy Dye, challenges golfers with considerable changes in elevation, thanks to the rolling hills of Crowley’s Ridge. Lake Austell and Lake Dunn are perfect for fishing and paddle boating, while hiking and horseback riding are other popular activities in the park.
