The Best Trails in Florida

Embark on a scenic trail while in the Sunshine State. Whether trekking by foot or by bike, enjoy both challenging and breathtaking trails for every level. Take a ride to Sebring, Florida and explore Highlands Hammock State Park’s most primordial virgin forests. With quite a few nature trails to choose from, try the Ancient Hammock Trail and stroll through towering cabbage palms and live oaks up to a thousand years old.

Head to the Blackwater River State Forest in northern Florida and hike the northernmost section of the Florida National Scenic Trail.  With giant red clay bluffs peering out along the creek, enjoy the spectacular scenery on the way to the Blackwater River.

Over in Ocala, hike one of the first sections of the Florida Scenic Trail in Ocala National Forest. Whether you're looking for a multi-day adventure or a half-day hike, head to the northern part through a rolling sand scrub habitat featuring an array of wildlife in view.

Located about 30 minutes east of Naples, journey into the heart of the Everglades ecosystem at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Discover the rugged beauty of the natural habitat of alligators, birds, deer, and turtles while hiking 2.5 miles over a boardwalk through the marshes.

Ormond Scenic Loop & Trail

Also known as the Florida Scenic Highway, the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail consists of a series of state and county highways found throughout Ormond Beach and the east central Florida coast. Drivers can access the trail by going on Volusia County Roads 2002, 4011, 2820, 2803, and State Roads 40 and A1A.

Covering over 30 miles, the route visits the Atlantic Ocean, North Peninsula, Tomoka and Bulow Creek State Parks, the Halifax River, and Ormond Beach city parks. Road visitors will also pass numerous shopping and eating opportunities, the Ormond Beach Firehouse, and the Casements.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

As a gateway site to the Great Florida Birding Trail, the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary offers a peaceful nature retreat to all Naples and Florida Gulf Coast visitors. Explore the sanctuary thanks to its two-mile long boardwalk, which takes visitors over marsh, wet prairies, flatwoods, and other ecosytems.

Don't miss glimpses of its rare inhabitants. Bird watchers are always on the lookout for the Wood Stork, the Painted Bunting, Little Blue Heron, Great Egret, and Barred Owl. Educational events and programs are available at the visitors center. Guests can also take guided walks and interpretative programs.

The Legacy Trail

Running alongside a former CSX Railroad corridor, the Legacy Trail is a biking and pedestrian trail than runs 10 miles between Sarasota and Venice in the west central Florida region. All Sarasota visitors can enter the trail at Potter Park, which offers ample parking.

From its norther terminus near the Central Sarasota Parkway to its ending near the Venetian Waterway Park Trail at Venice Avenue, the Legacy Trail offers its riders a taste of old, vintage Florida. Riders appreciate the scenery in Oscar Scherer Park and the trail's sheltered rest areas and picnic tables.
