Augusta Canal National Heritage Area
Georgia's first national heritage area, the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area lets you explore Augusta's history as well as enjoy outdoor recreation. The canal wanders along the Savannah River and makes its way through downtown Augusta. Start learning about the canal's history at the Augusta Canal Discovery Center, set in a former textile mill.
Choose to explore the canal on a boat tour; there are options for every interest, including Civil War, music, and beautiful sunset cruises. For a more active way to enjoy the canal, kayak, bike, hike, or walk along its length. Whichever route you travel, you'll explore scenic wetlands, pass waterfalls and lakes, and encounter historic sites including mills and the Old Coal Gas Plant.
