Exciting Theater Thrives in Kentucky

Do you have children who are already theater buffs? You can encourage their love of live performances at the Lexington Children’s Theatre. The Lyric started as a movie theater before segueing to a live performance venue. The Kentucky Theater, also in Lexington, began life in a similar fashion. This opulent movie house started receiving patrons in 1922. Today, the theater still features anniversary screenings of classic films, as well as modern movies and concerts.

If your travels take you over to Louisville, you can see productions from Broadway Across America, the Kentucky Opera, the Louisville Orchestra and the Louisville Ballet. They are all put up by The Kentucky Center, a wildly popular venue that draws in crowds throughout the year.

Kentucky Theater

Lexington Children's Theatre

Since 1938, the vibrant city of Lexington has provided educational entertainment for the children of the city. The invaluable Lexington Children's Theatre, not far south of Georgetown, is home to wonderful theatre productions. Throughout the years, the theatre has showcased a variety of family productions, including Noah's Flood, The Snow Queen, and Little Women. It's the premier children's theatre in eastern Kentucky.

In addition to theatre productions, the Lexington Children's Theatre also offers year-round workshops and classes, for those interested in learning about the behind-the-scenes action of the theatre. Children and adults interested in performing onstage are also given the opportunity to audition for the theatre's Discovery Shows, held throughout the year. Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center

Step back in time while in the "Horse Capital of the World," with a visit to one of Lexington's cultural icons. The Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center, located in downtown Lexington, was the place to be, from 1948 to 1963. This historical center started out as a movie theater and quickly became the place for all entertainment. This wonderful center hosted a variety of events including, fashion shows, vaudeville theatre acts, concerts, pageants and live Jazz, R&B and Soul music.

Throughout the years, theatre patrons listened to Count Basie, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Mercer Ellington, Wynonie Harris and Bill Brown perform on stage. Visit from nearby Paris or Georgetown and Enjoy a night out on the town by attending a ballet performance, music performance, viewing an art exhibit or watching a film at the center.
