Fort Point National Historic Site: Exceptional Military Architecture
Guarding the entrance to San Francisco Bay, Fort Point is a historic coastal fortification found at the southern foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was used by the U.S. military for over 150 years, from the Gold Rush era through World War II. Fort Point was built for the Civil War, and it witnessed the great earthquake of 1906 as well as the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. Today, the fortress is an important cultural and historical relic known for its outstanding brick mason military architecture. It’s also part of the vast Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is easy to access from San Francisco.
The artistic brick masonry at Fort Point National Historic Site matches the Golden Gate Bridge, and its arching casemates complement the curves of the iconic structure.
