Discover Space and Science Centers in Southern California

Learn about outer space, natural science, and innovation and technology at some of Southern California’s space and science centers. If you’re traveling with kids, be sure to visit the Children’s Discovery Museum of The Desert located between Palm Desert and Palm Springs. The museum features dozens of interactive exhibits and educational presentations for younger visitors.

The Griffith Observatory is located on Mount Hollywood and is the perfect destination to learn about space and science. Visit the Samuel Oschin Planetarium Theater or the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater to make the most of your visit. The Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana features dozens of hands-on activities for kids and several interactive science, math and technology exhibits and programs.

It’s also home to the iconic Solar Cube. You can enjoy some stunning views of Los Angeles from the Mount Wilson Observatory, home to the world’s largest telescope. You can take a guided or non-guided tour of the observatory to learn more about its founder, George Hale, and its famous telescopes.

Children's Discovery Museum of The Desert

Known as CDMOD, the Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert is a children’s center first established in 1986, and is set in California’s desert region. Located between Palm Desert and Palm Springs, CDMOD is open daily from January to April, and Tuesdays through Sunday throughout the year.

CDMOD showcases interactive and educational exhibits such as "Science Rules" and "Art is Versatile." There are even exhibits for smaller children and toddlers in the “For the Littlest Ones” exhibit. Enjoy your family visit to the Desert Region and Palm Desert.

Griffith Observatory

Opened in 1935, the Griffith Observatory is set on the slopes of Mount Hollywood, overlooking downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, and the Pacific Ocean. The southern California facility invites visitors to immerse themselves in a wide variety of space and science-related displays.

Exhibits like the Big Picture and attractions like Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater and Samuel Oschin Planetarium Theater thrill guests young and old. Overseen by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, the Café at the End of the Universe is open daily inside the observatory.

Discovery Science Center

You'll illuminate the mind with a visit to the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana. It's readily recognizable by its unique design – look for the the ten-story cube sitting on one of its points. Just off the Santa Ana Freeway on the west side of Main Street, the center offers interactive science, math and technology exhibits and programs. Bring the family, kids will love the hands-on activities and interactive exhibits.

The DSC has various theme areas including DinoQuest, Quake Zone and Space Exploration – all fun, interesting and educational. The iconic Solar Cube is a marvel in and of itself – producing energy for the center through photovoltaic panels. The Cube was the first use of this 3D geometric shape to be used in construction. Mount Wilson Observatory

For the most stunning and cinematic views of Los Angeles, head for the Mount Wilson Observatory. It's home to the historic 60-inch telescope, the world's largest telescope available for public. The observatory is located on the top of Mount Wilson, near Pasadena. George Hale founded the observatory in 1904 and built the 60-inch telescope in 1908.

The observatory is also home to the historic 100-inch Hooker telescope, the world's largest until 1947. The observatory was first funded by the Carnegie Institute of Washington.
