Prachin Buri – Thailand’s Hidden Gem
Step off the beaten track and discover fresh air, spectacular scenery, soft adventure and ancient culture in Prachin Buri, Thailand’s hidden gem. Located just 150km east of Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi Airport, this charming province is easily accessible for domestic and international travelers. And yet, this largely rural region feels a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the Thai capital. Visitors have array of attractions to explore, many of which are connected to the ancient Dvaravati culture that thrived in the area between the 6th and 11th centuries. The history of the region dates back even further however; Prachin Buri’s provincial symbol is the Bodhi tree at Wat Si Maha Phot temple, which is believed be 2,000 years old and the most ancient in Thailand. This scenic province is also home to many natural wonders, with three national parks – Thap Lan, Pang Sida, and UNESCO World Heritage-listed Khao Yai – covering over 3,000 square kilometers and blessed with winding jungle trails, wild rivers and dramatic waterfalls. So whether you’re seeking a rewarding cultural retreat or exciting adventure, Prachin Buri has it all.
Thap Lan National Park
Thailand’s second largest national park, Thap Lan is a spectacular natural landscape. Rising to a peak of 992 meters, this mountainous terrain features jungle-clad hills, deep valleys, waterfalls and rivers, along with dramatic dams and reservoirs. The park is home to many species of flora and fauna, including elusive wild animals such as tigers, elephants and bears. Visitors are more likely to encounter the area’s diverse birdlife, with almost 150 different species. Popular destinations within the park include Lan Forest and Recreational Garden, which features beautiful flowers, Namtok Thap Lan and Namtok Bo Thong waterfalls, and the 300-meter-long beach at Lam Plai Mat Dam reservoir.
Kaeng Hin Phoeng
One of the highlights of any trip to Prachin Buri is the region’s world-class white-water rafting. As rivers flow down from the mountains of Khao Yai National Park, they create wonderful conditions for soft adventure. One of the best rafting areas is Kaeng Hin Phoeng, a section of rapids on the Sai Yai River. This turbulent water takes approximately one hour to navigate and even includes a fierce whirlpool, making it a good challenge for experienced rafters. The river then continues more smoothly for the next two hours, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy their ride through the jungle. Rafting is possible at Kaeng Hin Phoeng during the rainy season from June to October.
Chao Phraya Abhaibhubate Building
The elegant, colonial-style Chao Phraya Abhaibhubate Building was constructed in 1909 as a residence for Thailand’s King Rama V on his royal visit to Prachin Buri. Surrounded by landscaped gardens with tropical flowers and swaying palm trees, this exquisite two-story mansion features a unique front porch area topped with a large dome. The exterior is adorned with floral designs, shuttered windows and many artistic embellishments, while the interior is decorated in a Western style. Today, the villa is located within the area of the Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital on Prachin Anuson Road, which is one of the country’s leading centers for traditional Thai medicine.
King Naresuan the Great Shrine
King Naresuan the Great is one of Thailand’s most revered monarchs. Reigning from 1590 to 1605, he was the 18th monarch of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, the second king of the Sukhothai Dynasty. His shrine is located at the Noen Hom Intersection, approximately eight kilometers north of Prachin Buri city on Highway 320, commemorating the time he stayed in Prachin Buri on his journey from Ayutthaya to Angkor. This attraction houses a large statue of King Naresuan the Great, along with several statues of fighting cocks, which were given to the king by the people as a gesture of their gratitude.
Prachin Buri – “Land of the Firefly”
Every rainy season, Prachin Buri comes to life with a spectacular natural display that literally lights up the sky. An estimated 100,00 fireflies (“asymmetricata circumdata”) come out at night to mate, creating a dazzling luminescent yellow light show in the area’s forests. The best place to see this sparkling attraction is at Phrom Yothi Military Camp, which attracts many local residents and tourists every weekend. To accommodate the influx of visitors, the authorities have installed a raised walkway and a covered viewing platform, which provides the perfect place to watch the show. Of course, the best time to see the fireflies is after the sun sets, especially around 6:30pm to 8pm, but only in the rainy season.
Dasada Gallery
Prachin Buri is a wonderfully unspoiled province that is home to a wealth of environmental and ecological wonders. One of the best places to experience this organic charm is the Dasada Gallery, which is in the center of the town and showcases the beauty of Asian flowers. This garden and greenhouse features an amazing array of tropical blooms, including hydrangea, gerbera, chrysanthemums and many species of orchid, as well as sculptures and other eye-catching features. Guests can spend endless hours strolling around the site, soaking up the vibrant colors and floral fragrances. There is also a small restaurant and souvenir shop.
Wat Sra Morakot / Morakot Ancient City
Wat Sra Morakot is a spectacular and highly significant Buddhist site in Prachin Buri province, approximately 20 kilometers from the city. This vast historical and archaeological site comprises a complex of ancient structures and monuments dating from the 9th Century. The central features are the footprints of Lord Buddha, which have been carved in the floor. They are believed to be the oldest and largest of their kind in Thailand. There are many other ancient ruins to explore, including a stupa, ponds, and an exhibition area. For Buddhist visitors, or anyone with an interest in Thai history, this is a must-visit attraction.
Si Mahosot Ancient City
Si Mahosot Ancient City is a vast historical site that dates from the Davaravati period (6th to 13th centuries) and covers an area of nearly 280 acres. Visitors can spend many hours exploring this impressive and well-maintained oval-shaped space, which features more than 100 ancient structures, along with moats, ponds and earthen walls. A main quadrangle also features a series of carved and sculpted animals, such as elephant and snakes. Located approximately 20 kilometers from the modern town of Prachin Buri, Si Mahosot was an important ancient city that was shaped by Hindu and Brahmanism beliefs. This is a deeply intriguing place to come and spend the day.
