The city of Commerce offers plenty of Route 66 charm all its own. Old-school baseball fans, for instance, will be interested in checking out Mickey Mantle's Boyhood Home. Shortly after joining U.S. 60, Route 66 enters the northern Oklahoma City of Afton, which features the Afton Station Classic & Antique Car Museum as a local must-see. Featuring a great selection of older car models, with a special emphasis on the Packard line of autos, traveling car buffs.
As you approach Chelsea, you’ll see some interesting bridges. An original 1926 bridge over Pryor Creek following the original, twisting roadbed is noted with a historical marker. The bridge was replaced after six short years by a new truss bridge that still carries westbound traffic on Route 66.
Tulsa is Oklahoma's second largest city and one of the 40 largest in the U.S. Along Route 66, only Chicago, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, and Los Angeles are bigger. Tulsa, though, offers the first real "skyline" along Route 66 since St. Louis. The Bank of Oklahoma Tower, a proud member of the skyline, anchors a sizeable downtown boasting a variety of cool architecture, several corporate headquarters, and new sports arenas. Tulsa features the Tulsa Shock of the WNBA, the Tulsa Talons of the Arena Football League, and the Tulsa Drillers, a Double A baseball team affiliated with the Colorado Rockies. Plus, there are two Division I college teams here – the University of Tulsa and Oral Roberts University.
You'll find parts of Weatherford are a little out of this world. In fact, this plains community is home to the Stafford Air & Space Museum, named for astronaut and native son Thomas Stafford who commanded the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz mission. Check out the exhibits from the Hubble Telescope, Russia's Mir Space Station, and a rock from the Moon during your visit. Weatherford is also home to Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
