Explore George Rogers Clark National Historical Park

Located in Vincennes, George Rogers Clark National Historical Park boasts the largest national monument outside of Washington, D.C. Installed at the site of the former Fort Sackville, the giant granite memorial commemorates the birth of the United States north of the Ohio River. Situated on the banks of the Wabash River near the Indiana/Illinois border, the park is open daily and offers free admission. In 1779 British Lt. Governor Henry Hamilton surrendered Fort Sackville to George Rogers Clark. The huge victory in the American Revolution opened up the land that would become Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The Memorial Building, constructed of granite, is impressive with 16 Greek columns, a saucer dome and large glass panels. Inside, you’ll view seven spectacular murals that tell stories about Clark, the army and the surrounding area. Be sure to browse the Visitor Center for historic exhibits and maps to the grounds. The 30-minute movie, Long Knives, provides more background on Clark and the battle. Don’t miss the monument to Francis Vigo, the Italian-American merchant who was crucial in Clark’s victory. Visit the grounds of the Basilica St. Francis Xavier, the Lincoln Memorial Bridge, and see where Clark’s headquarters stood during the siege.
