Tour the Oregon State Capitol
A tour of Oregon’s State Capitol in Salem is a terrific educational experience that reveals an intriguing world of politics, history, architecture and art.
The State Capitol Building was completed in 1938 and houses the legislature, Secretary of State, the Treasurer and the Governor of Oregon. Guided tours through the Capitol provide a wealth of information about the history of the state, the governing process and the history of the building. The tour takes visitors through the rotunda, the Senate and House chambers, the public galleries, the Senate history room, and the Governor’s ceremonial office, among other stops.
Tower tours tell tales of the gold pioneer statue and reveal incredible views of the City of Salem and the nearby mountains. There are 121 stairs leading to the Oregon Pioneer observation deck, open during the warmer months. When the legislature is in session, you can also observe the Senate and House floor sessions and open committee meetings, even without a guide.
The State Capitol State Park and Mall are public grounds full of information on the history of Oregon. Enjoy the statues of prominent Oregonians, the WWII Memorial and the Walk of Flags, among many other “must see” displays.
